About BioRender

UVM has a limited subscription to BioRender: we have 300 "seats" assigned to specific individuals. Before 2024, we had a site-level license that provided more general access, but we could not afford the price increase to keep that level of access.

For most people

Most people can use BioRender's free Basic License, and don't need one of our paid seats.

New users can sign up at https://app.biorender.com/user/signup. Then log in at https://app.biorender.com. (Be sure to log in using that password, don't accept an offer to "Log in via Portal".)

The primary limitations of the Basic License are that you are limited to five illustrations at a time, and that you must be using it for "academic purposes" (see their FAQ).

If you have been added to our license

People with assigned license "seats" should log in at https://app.biorender.com/portal/uvm with your UVM NetID and password. If you were an active user with many illustrations as of February 2024, you would have been granted a license automatically. We have also added people individually on request when they need the paid features.

What if the free tier doesn't work for me?

There are other differences between the Basic and Paid versions, particularly regarding publication rights. If you do plan to publish your illustrations in journals or otherwise need the extra features, please contact danaref@uvm.edu to request one of the remaining seats on the new license. We will do our best to accommodate you.

If you no longer need the extra features and can give up your seat so someone else can use it, let danaref@uvm.edu know. We really appreciate it!

BioRender does offer other, paid tiers with varying features, if you want to subscribe on your own. See https://www.biorender.com/pricing for the options, and note the FAQ at the bottom about discounts for students, especially undergraduates. For feature comparison, our pre-2024 UVM license was the Academic Institution license.

We're sorry for the inconvenience. We simply can't afford to provide full access to everyone, and felt that this was the best compromise rather than having to cancel our subscription altogether.
