The short answer to the question “Who can use and access the UVM libraries?” is – everyone! We welcome all associated with UVM and all Vermont residents to come to our libraries and to use our materials. Not everyone has the same level of access, especially when it comes to accessing our materials from off campus or requesting special materials and equipment. This can be confusing at times. We’ll walk you through it:
"UVM libraries provide an invaluable service for myself and my team. From an impressive array of physical and digital publications, use of state-of-the-art equipment and access to global media, in the nonstop tsunami of information, our UVM library staff always provide us with knowledgeable navigation …and teach us to swim."
John Turner, Editorial and Creative Services Manager, Larner College of Medicine
If you’re not currently affiliated with UVM, you can become a guest borrower. Any resident of Vermont, 18 years of age or older can get a guest borrower card for free from our three Libraries’ main service desks.
Note that guest borrowers do not have access to take out media equipment.
There are two ways for UVM alumni to get library cards. Alumni who are current residents of Vermont should stop in and get a guest borrower card because it’s free.
Alumni are also eligible for an alumni borrower card, but you should expect to pay a one-time $10 fee because of the processing of the CatCard. See alumni card information on the CatCard website.
Like any guest borrower, UVM alumni have access to most library resources while at UVM Libraries buildings (see guest borrower section). They can also take out books.
Faculty members from another college or university who are in the Vermont area for an extended stay can get a Guest Faculty Borrower card. Once you have this card, you will have access to borrow books from the library and use digital resources on site. Our circulation departments want to accommodate your research needs, and we are happy to work with you on the duration for borrowing materials, or anything else that comes up.
To get a guest faculty card, please stop by our service desks with a current university ID from your home institution and either a letter from that institution or an OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowers Card.
UVM is a member of the Boston Library Consortium (BLC). Therefore, we honor those from partner consortium schools. Please obtain a BLC card from your home institution to receive guest-borrowing access to UVM Libraries’ resources. This privilege is available to students, faculty and staff.
In addition, UVM students, faculty and staff are eligible to borrow materials from other BLC libraries. Ask about a BLC card at the Howe circulation desk.
If you've read above and you want to get a guest borrowers card, please stop into Howe or Dana's main library service desks with proof of address — this could be a Vermont ID card, or a piece of mail indicating a Vermont address. You will then fill out an application and we will mail your library card to you within a few days.
