Intro Text Box

The short answer to the question “Who can use and access the UVM libraries?” is – everyone! We welcome all associated with UVM and all Vermont residents to come to our libraries and to use our materials. Not everyone has the same level of access, especially when it comes to accessing our materials from off campus or requesting special materials and equipment. This can be confusing at times. We’ll walk you through it:

Access for people currently attending UVM or working at UVM and the UVM Medical Center

Accordions-UVM People

UVM students, faculty, staff and faculty emeriti have full access to library resources including books, spaces, online databases, librarian consultations and more. Present your CATcard to take out physical library materials. Access e-materials through our library website. You can also borrow passes for free admission to local museums and historical sites (seasonal restrictions apply). Learn more about our library collections.
If you are connected to the Larner College of Medicine or the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, you can access the libraries’ resources with your UVM NetID (find your netID). You will have the same full access to resources and services as other UVM students, faculty and staff.
For UVMMC employees who do not have this connection to UVM through the colleges, you can still access library resources in a variety of ways:
  • You can access online journals and databases (like Pubmed or UptoDate) at a UVMMC location or remotely [link to connecting to Library Resources Research Guide)
  • You can get materials through our interlibrary loan and document delivery services. Request materials.
  • You can present a valid UVM Medical Center badge to take out books from UVM Libraries.
  • You can schedule a research consultation with a Dana Health Sciences library librarian. Find your librarian.
  • If you have a uvm.edu or a uvmhealth email, you can also book spaces for group study or collaborative work.

Callout Box

Access for guest borrowers who do not currently work at or attend UVM

Accordions-Not UVM

If you’re not currently affiliated with UVM, you can become a guest borrower. Any resident of Vermont, 18 years of age or older can get a guest borrower card for free from our three Libraries’ main service desks.

Who can become a guest borrower?

  • Vermont residents.
  • Students at other colleges/universities (Champlain College and St. Michael’s College, see section for you).
  • UVM alumni (see section for you).
  • Faculty and staff retired from UVM (see section for you).
  • Faculty from other institutions (see section for you).

What do guest borrowers have access to?

  • Borrow up to 10 books.
  • Use computers and reading spaces at all three libraries.
  • Access online databases and other print resources from within the library buildings.
  • Passes for free admission to local museums and historical sites (seasonal restrictions apply).

Note that guest borrowers do not have access to take out media equipment.

There are two ways for UVM alumni to get library cards. Alumni who are current residents of Vermont should stop in and get a guest borrower card because it’s free.

Alumni are also eligible for an alumni borrower card, but you should expect to pay a one-time $10 fee because of the processing of the CatCard. See alumni card information on the CatCard website.

Like any guest borrower, UVM alumni have access to most library resources while at UVM Libraries buildings (see guest borrower section). They can also take out books.

Faculty members from another college or university who are in the Vermont area for an extended stay can get a Guest Faculty Borrower card. Once you have this card, you will have access to borrow books from the library and use digital resources on site. Our circulation departments want to accommodate your research needs, and we are happy to work with you on the duration for borrowing materials, or anything else that comes up.

To get a guest faculty card, please stop by our service desks with a current university ID from your home institution and either a letter from that institution or an OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowers Card.

UVM is a member of the Boston Library Consortium (BLC). Therefore, we honor those from partner consortium schools. Please obtain a BLC card from your home institution to receive guest-borrowing access to UVM Libraries’ resources. This privilege is available to students, faculty and staff.

In addition, UVM students, faculty and staff are eligible to borrow materials from other BLC libraries. Ask about a BLC card at the Howe circulation desk.

Champlain or St. Mike’s students, faculty and staff can present their own school ID to take out materials and to receive guest borrower access.
You are welcome in the libraries and will request a guest borrower card to take out books.
Retired UVM faculty and staff who live in Vermont can get guest borrower cards. Faculty who become faculty emeritus retain the faculty library privileges of a working faculty member.
