How to print:

How can I print from my laptop or mobile device?

Log in to the Pharos Print Center using your UVM NetID and password.

Upload

Upload the documents you want to print.

Please Note: Files larger than 50 MB in size cannot be uploaded to Pharos Print Center. Please have them printed at UVM Print & Mail at 118 Waterman Building.

HTML documents are not supported. To print a web page, find the Print feature in your browser, then choose "Save to PDF." You can then print that PDF.
Other common file formats like .pdf, .docx, .pptx and image files can be printed.

Configure

Configure your document within the Pharos Print Center if needed. Look to the bottom of the screen for these options.

  • Choose Color or Black/White
  • Choose single or double-sided
  • Specify a range of pages
  • Set the number of copies
  • 8 1/2" by 11" is the default paper size at Howe Library. Our troubleshooting tips contain information on other printable sizes at Howe Library. Contact the UVM Print and Mail Center to print a full range of page sizes.

Pay for Printing

You will also be able to see the cost of your print job and your UVM CATcard CAT$cratch balance at the bottom of the screen.

Send to the Printer

Select your printer. You can choose between Color or Black/White.

  • If no printer is selected in the Pharos Print Center, your document will be sent to a print release station located next to the printers.
  • Other printers are available across campus including on the first floor of the Davis Center, at the Dana Health Sciences Library and at Silver Special Collections Library.
  • You can also print at the Print and Mail Center in Waterman or your department may offer printing. The process for printing in these locations may be different.

Pick up your print

At Howe Library, head to the Cyber Café to print or pick up your document. At Dana Library the printer is to the right of the front desk.

  • Either use your CATcard to unlock a print release station, then find and print your document (print jobs are arranged by NetID)
  • Or print directly from the Pharos Print Center on your device without using the print release station.

How can I print from the library computers?

Send a print job

Double-sided printing is the default. Jobs remain in the queue for two hours.

  • Choose a printer at Howe Library:
    • Cafe-BW-Queue (Black and White jobs)
    • Cafe-Color-Queue (Color or black and white jobs)

HTML documents are not supported. To print a web page, find the Print feature in your browser, then choose "Save to PDF." You can then print that PDF.
Other common file formats like .pdf, .docx, .pptx and image files can be printed.

You can also choose to send print jobs via Pharos Print Center as described in How Can I Print from my Laptop or Mobile Device.

Pay for printing

  • Print jobs may be paid for with an existing CAT$cratch account.
    • Guests can purchase a CAT$cratch card or deposit money onto one, with cash or credit card at one of the kiosks in Howe Library (near the front desk), at the Dana Health Sciences Library (near the back of the library) or online. CAT$cratch cards cost $1.00 and come with $1.00 worth of value.

Pick up your print

The main printers are located in the Cyber Café on the main level of Howe Library, in Dana Health Sciences Library, and Silver Special Collections.

  • Printing takes place after release of your job from a Pharos print release station attached to one of the printers.
  • Using the card reader located near the printer/copier, swipe or touch your CATcard or phone CATcard, or a CAT$cratch card to view the queued jobs.
  • Jobs sent from UVM affiliate/authenticating computers and from the Pharos Print Center will be listed under your UVM NetID or Guest user account.
  • Jobs sent from public (stand-up) computer stations will be found listed under the computer name (e.g. USER 102).
  • Select your job and hit "print."

Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot printing problems:

Are you struggling to print a document? Here are a few steps to help you avoid printing problems.

Please Note: Files larger than 50 MB in size cannot be uploaded to Pharos Print Center. Please have them printed at UVM Print & Mail at 118 Waterman Building.

At certain times in the semester, most students will have projects due at the same time, which often means they are trying to print at the same time. Plan ahead to avoid stress.
Printers are available at Howe Library, Dana Health Sciences Library, Silver Special Collections Library, Waterman Print and Mail Center or your department, if they offer printing. Different locations may use a different printing process. Please see "other locations" above.
The printers sometimes have trouble printing documents from email, Google Docs and other online locations. This can be solved by first saving the document to your device and printing from that version.
  • Images (.jpeg, .gif, etc.) often come in odd sizes. Consider pasting an image into a Word or PDF document before printing.
  • Howe Library printers can print 8 1/2" x 11", 8 1/2" x 14, or 11" x 17" documents.
  • Ask for 8 1/2" x 14" or 11" 17" paper at the library Circulation Desk prior to printing as they are not loaded into the printers.
  • If you need a different paper size, contact the UVM Print and Mail Center.
If a document has a mix of text, graphics, charts and tables, it can be difficult for the printer to render it. To Print to PDF, after you choose "Print", pick "Print to PDF" as the destination, rather than a specific printer.

What to do if I get an "unsupported card type" error when I try to print?

If you receive an "unsupported card type" error when using Pharos Print Center, email Library Systems with the following information:

  • Full name
  • UVM NetID
  • Last 9 digits of your CATcard barcode.

The CATcard barcode is located on the back of your physical card (if you have one) or displayed on your digital card. The digital CATcard barcode is found when navigating to the wallet application on your phone, selecting the CATcard, then selecting the more info button in the top right corner. The barcode number will start with 21733.
