When you work with Special Collections, you may want to have a copy of the materials you're working with. Here are the things you need to know.

The image at the top of this page comes our UVM Libraries Digital Collections - an 1889 fire insurance map of the city of Burlington. This excerpt shows Billings Library, the current home of Silver Special Collections Library and other buildings along University Place.

After consultation with the public services staff, researchers working in the Silver Special Collections Library may copy, photograph or scan material for personal research at no charge using personal digital cameras and cell phones or our scanners or copier.

Document delivery

If you are a University of Vermont student, staff, or faculty member with a valid NetID, you may request an electronic version of articles and book chapters housed in Special Collections using the free Document Delivery service.

  • Make a document delivery request in your ILLiad account. If you are a first-time ILLiad user, register for an account.
  • Log in, then choose Document Delivery Request from the New Request menu. Complete the form.
  • You may request up to two chapters from a book and one article from a journal or newspaper, with a 50-page or 10% limit.
  • You will receive an email notification when the PDF file is available in your ILLiad account.

Staff reproduction

For researchers working off-site or those needing high quality reproductions, we may be able to provide digital copies.

  • Researchers may place a request for reproductions by email or by calling (802) 656-2138.
  • We consider reproduction requests on a case-by-case basis.
  • We cannot guarantee legibility if the bindings are tight, ink is faded, paper is discolored, etc.
  • Files can be delivered as .jpg, .tiff, or .pdf formats.
  • Turnaround time will vary depending on the size of the request and the number of requests in the queue.

We may charge fees for large or complex staff reproduction requests.

  • PDF files: $0.10 per scan, with a minimum fee of $5.00
  • JPG or TIFF files, low to high resolution, greyscale or color of the original document: $5.00 per scan
  • If reproductions are intended for use in a commercial publication, we charge a $10.00 per image commercial use fee.
  • We accept payment in U.S. dollars by check made payable to the University of Vermont.

Publication & permission

  • If copies of our materials are in the public domain or the University of Vermont does not hold the copyright, we do not grant or deny permission to publish or distribute.
  • Researchers are responsible for identifying copyright holders and obtaining any legally necessary permission to publish or use Special Collections material.
  • We can only grant permission to publish or distribute items for which the University of Vermont holds the copyright. Physical ownership does not imply copyright.
  • Please include citations and credits for images of materials in our collections. Credit lines should acknowledge Special Collections, University of Vermont.
