We offer many ways to get the materials you need, whether it's an electronic copy or something you can’t find in our collection. We do this through interlibrary loan and document delivery.
You may hear us refer to "Illiad" -- this is the system where you will create an account for requesting materials, tracking their progress or renewing.
When items are not owned by UVM Libraries, our faculty, staff, students and UVM Medical Center employees can request items from other institutions through interlibrary loan (ILL). This free service works best for users with one-time, short-term needs. If you need something for longer-term use, consider recommending a purchase.
You cannot order text books through ILL. We have a policy that explains why.
When items are owned by the library, we can supply faculty, staff, students and UVM Medical Center employees with electronic copies of articles, book chapters and microform. This service includes materials in Howe, Silver, Dana libraries and collections in the Library Research Annex.
Our document delivery service follows the UVM copyright policy. As a result, we will not scan:
Users who need more than two chapters from a book or one article from a journal issue are encouraged to visit the library to use these materials in person.
Sometimes, materials can come much quicker than what we give as a guidelines, but our turn-around times are as follows:
The library we borrow materials from set the period of time that you can have it for. This duration will be found in your ILLiad account. Replacement fees starting at $95 will apply if you do not return your ILL materials on time.
Sometimes, the lending library will recall an item or say that it needs to come back right away. ILL loans are subject to recall at any time if a patron from a lending library needs to use the item.
“I use the interlibrary loan service on a regular basis to get copies of scientific articles for faculty. The website specifies that scans typically take 3-5 business days, but I nearly always receive a response the same day, or the next day at the latest. Their turnaround speed is magical, and that level of efficiency is seriously impressive.”
