What is Open Access?

SPARC Open Access logo

Open Access (OA) is a set of principles and practices for the publication of digital content freely available to all, without fee or access restrictions for the readers.

Scholars in all fields are experimenting with open access publishing models for a variety of materials associated with the processes of scholarship: peer-reviewed journal articles, preprints, books, textbooks, data sets, audio, video, specialized software, survey instruments, research protocols, figures, and even researcher identity.

UVM's Commitment to Open Scholarship

The UVM Libraries partners with the Faculty Senate, the Office of the Provost, and other faculty on campus to advance the goals of Open Access and Open Scholarship.

In the spring of 2023, UVM’s Faculty Senate passed a Resolution on Open Access and Open Science, calling on “the different colleges and schools of the University to develop policies and procedures promoting open access sharing of scholarly output” and to “review their incentive structures in hiring, reappointment, promotion, and tenure [RPT] to ensure alignment with open scholarship …"

The Brief on the UVM Faculty Senate's Open Access Resolution provides context for the resolution, outlines implications and offers guidance for deans, chairs and faculty members as they work to implement the resolution.
