Make Your Research Articles Freely Available

UVM Libraries offers many supports for open access and open scholarship.

Make Your Research Articles Freely Available!

University of Vermont authors can make their research articles freely available by:

  • Depositing a copy of the peer-reviewed article in an open access repository (free), or
  • Publishing an open access article on the publisher's website (may involve a fee, support may be available)

Deposit a Copy of Your Article in an Open Access Repository

Deposit in UVM ScholarWorks

If you published in a subscription journal, you may be able to deposit your author accepted manuscript (AAM) in UVM ScholarWorks. How can you find out what is permitted?

Deposit in Your Grant Funder's Repository

Grant funders may require recipients to deposit work in specific OA repositories. Public Access Plans & Guidance links to guidance from U.S. Federal Agencies. Other sources of grant funding also have public access policies. You can find these policies by searching by Funder in Open Policy Finder.

Publish an Open Access Article on the Publisher's Website (free)

Some open access journals charge no publication fees, so the VOR of your article can be freely available immediately after acceptance on the publisher's website.

The UVM Press hosts two examples of such journals: Journal of Ecological Engineering Design and Journal of Black Military Studies (forthcoming).

Publish an Open Access Article on the Publisher's Website (APC fee)

Many subscription and open access journals charge a fee (such as an APC) to make your article's Version of Record (VOR) freely available.

Resources that may help you pay these fees:

  • UVM OA Publishing Subsidies UVM Libraries participates in few initiatives, agreements and partnerships that can offer you OA publishing subsidies.
  • Association memberships Associations or Societies that publish journals may offer a discount for their members
  • Grant funding APCs can be built into a grant budget. In fact, many funders require grant-funded research articles to be published or shared via open access.
