American Society for Microbiology S2O FAQ
UVM Libraries is participating in a Subscribe 2 Open Agreement with the publisher American Society for Microbiology for six of its titles. This means that articles published in those titles will become Open Access if they reach a funding threshold from subscribers like UVM without any cost or requirement from the authors.
UVM affiliated authors must still pay page charges, but will have a 25% discount on those costs. If members of ASM, they will receive a 50% discount.
A Subscribe 2 Open contract commits a publisher to making some or all of its journal titles OA upon sufficient numbers of library subscribers commiting to continue to subscribe. Subscribing libraries typically gain benefits such as coverage of Author Processing Charges (APCs) for affiliated authors..
UVM's agreement with American Society for Microbiology will contribute to making their flagship journals OA for all, as well as covering APCs for affiliated authors. UVM affiliates will also gain a 25% discount on page charges.
This agreement covers American Society for Microbiology's 6 flagship journals. UVM affiliates will also receive a 25% discount on any page charges that this publisher imposes.

As an S2O title, all articles accepted by and published within the journal will be Open Access if the funding threshold is met for the year.
No. You will still need to pay page charges for this publisher. However, you will recieve a 25% discount as a UVM/UVMMC afffiliate. If you are also a member of the American Society for Microbiology, you will receive a 50% discount.
You must submit your article and have it accepted.
If the publisher's funding threshold is met for Subscribe 2 Open, it will become Open Access.
If you do not want your article to be published OA, you do not have to. You can check a box to Opt Out.
