Where is the collection and how can I use it?

  • Come see us! The map room is located next to the U.S. government information collection on the ground floor of Howe Library.
  • If you’d like to use the map room, please make an appointment. Email the map room or call us at (802) 656-2542.
  • You can find atlases by searching the library catalog. However, most of our sheet maps are not in the library catalog. To find these, you must use a card catalog in the map room.
  • Most non-Vermont maps may be checked out to UVM students, faculty, and staff.

What's in the map collection?

  • Hundreds of atlases and about 200,000 sheet maps of all areas of the world. The vast majority of maps in the collection were published in the 20th century.
  • Topographic maps for the entire country.
  • Printed aerial photographs of Vermont from 1937 to 1990. Sets from 1962, 1974 and 1980 cover the entire state.
  • Maps that show a wide variety of features and data in addition to borders, roads, and place names. For example, maps can show population density, languages spoken, incidence of disease, land use, natural resources, toxic waste sites, ski trails, lake depths, and wildlife distribution.
